Prioritize Oral Health

Dental cleanings and checkups are an important way to maintain good oral health. Combined with regular, good dental hygiene, professional cleanings are critical for preventive dental care. At Waterloo West Dentistry, we provide quality dental care. Our dental cleanings and checkups go beyond a quick clean for whiter teeth. We will perform a thorough cleaning to help prevent gum disease and tooth decay, and carefully remove plaque and tartar.

Our friendly and welcoming staff will ensure you have a positive dental experience. We provide dental cleanings for the entire family and can cater to your specific needs. We work hard to make every visit pleasant and take every measure to eliminate any discomfort you may have.

In addition to our preventive cleaning for oral health, we also check for any signs of gum disease or tooth decay. We perform an oral cancer screening and screen for wisdom teeth issues or other dental problems. We perform digital X-rays and other diagnostics to ensure your complete oral health. We also provide fluoride treatment as a preventative treatment, where appropriate, especially for younger patients. We ensure each patient leaving our clinic has a healthy smile!

Oral Exams and Cleanings

What To Expect

We will thoroughly examine your mouth, teeth, gums, and throat, to check for any potential concerns and evaluate your overall oral health before starting your professional teeth cleaning. We will discuss with you if you need any further, special treatments, like root planing or any fillings.

  • We check for infection, gum disease, tooth decay, and determine whether dental restorations, replacements, or treatments are needed.
  • We may use X-rays for diagnosis of some decay, bone levels, and to assess emerging wisdom teeth.
  • We also perform an oral cancer screening and other diagnostics as necessary.
Dental Cleanings for Oral Health

Professional dental cleanings should be done every six months, for optimal results. Dentists recommend this to avoid risks of tooth decay, gum disease, oral cancer, and other concerns. This dual purpose of a dental cleaning - to monitor ongoing dental health and providing deep cleaning to prevent plaque buildup and decay - make these visits critical for your dental health.

At your appointment, one of our dentists will remove any tartar and plaque buildup. Plaque is a sticky build up in your mouth that can harden into tartar. Our tools and experience help us to remove it carefully, without damaging teeth. Tartar can form above or below the gum line, usually in harder-to-reach areas. It is a darker, hard, rough covering that can lead to receding gums and gum disease. Your dentist will use special tools to carefully remove it.

We do a full cleaning and tooth polishing to remove stains, too. Many patients feel as though they have had a teeth whitening treatment with these stains polished off.

Benefits of a Dental Cleaning

Regular checkups and teeth cleaning is one of the most important ways you can take care of your teeth. A professional dental cleaning clears away plaque, tartar and bacteria that even good daily brushing and flossing will miss. This helps you reduce your risks of tooth decay, gum disease and even bad breath.

They are also an important opportunity for your dentist to give you a full oral exam, to check for early signs of oral cancer, damaged teeth and other significant concerns.

Because a complete teeth cleaning is a preventative treatment, you can avoid severe, expensive dental concerns later. Professionally removing plaque and tartar prevents them from leading to tooth decay and other issues; small dental concerns that are not caught in time can become very painful and much more serious.

Regular teeth cleaning removes many stains, such as coffee, tea, or red wine stains, from your teeth. This helps them look much brighter, similar to a teeth whitening treatment.

The dental experience and process has improved greatly over the years. We use advanced technology for better results and a more pleasant visit, and provide a comfortable environment. We also work directly with most insurance companies to make the insurance process easier for you.

Maintain Your Healthy Teeth After

Good Dental Hygiene

At Waterloo West Dentistry, after your cleaning, we will coach you on how to best care for your healthy smile, for ongoing excellent dental health. We will give you tips and advice on:

  • How to brush teeth properly with fluoride toothpaste, and the importance of dental floss.
  • How to encourage your children to take good care of their teeth. A fluoride treatment helps with children as a preventative measure, but good habits are important, too.
  • Your individual dental needs based on any medical conditions you may have or other concerns. We always prioritize your overall health and wellbeing.

We are always happy to answer any questions you have. If you have any concerns, discomfort, pain, or sensitivity, let us know - we are here to help!

Taking Care of Your Teeth and Mouth

Ensuring you have a regular dental cleaning every six months is an excellent way to take care of your teeth, but there are many other steps you can take. If you ever have questions about your health or getting teeth cleaned, let us know. At Waterloo West Dentistry, we believe in making sure our patients have all of the answers they need.

If you ever have tooth pain or any other concern, contact us immediately, and do not wait until your next scheduled dental cleaning. In between dental cleanings, always check your teeth and mouth for any changes. Look for red, swollen, or painful gums, and bleeding when you brush your teeth or are flossing. Chronic bad breath is a symptom that should not be ignored, as well.

If you have bleeding or open sores that do not heal, numbness or a tingling sensation, white or red patches, or small lumps or thickening around your mouth, contact us right away.

Brushing and flossing daily is essential for cleaning bacteria and plaque away; always use a soft toothbrush and make sure to brush those hard to reach places.

Maintain good oral health by maintaining your overall health. A healthy diet and drinking plenty of water helps you keep your healthy teeth and gums, too. Avoid excessive sugary foods and drinks, and have a well-balanced diet. You should also avoid excessive alcohol. Smoking or vaping has a negative impact on oral hygiene and is linked with oral cancer.

At Waterloo West Dentistry, we are here to help you with any questions or concerns.
