Gum Reshaping for a Smile Makeover

Contouring Gums Beautifully

Gum contouring is a cosmetic dentistry procedure, aimed at improving the aesthetics of your smile, whether you have receding gums or a gummy smile that you would like corrected. Contouring involves shaping and sculpting the gumline for a more balanced, even appearance, with the perfect ratio of gums to teeth.

The gum contouring procedure can involve grafting more tissue onto thin or receded gums, or cutting away excess gums around your teeth. Grafting gums is performed for those with gum recession, while removing gum tissue is useful for those with uneven or bulky gums. Sometimes, with periodontal disease, gum grafting (adding tissue onto your gum) may be medically necessary.

Waterloo West Cosmetic Dentistry provides both types of contouring. Our cosmetic dentistry professionals are experienced in creating attractive, even gums.

When Is It Helpful?

If you are concerned about the appearance of your gums, we can dramatically improve the look through gum reconstruction and contouring. We consult with you to ensure you get the results you are looking for, and use imaging to help you visualize how your new smile could look.

Cosmetic Dentistry

Improve the look of your smile, with a smile makeover. Gum contouring can fix both gummy smiles and gum recession, for a more balanced, aesthetic look.

Oral Health

To preserve healthy teeth, occasionally gum contouring, where gum tissues are added to receding gums, may be necessary. It may be necessary to create enough gum tissue before braces, too.

After receiving dental implants, gum contouring can help them look more natural. Excess gum tissue is removed to show more of the implant crown and contoured for a natural appearance.

Painless Treatment

Gum Reshaping Procedure

Many patients feel a degree of anxiety about these procedures, but they are painless. You will be given a local anesthetic before beginning, for your comfort. It is a specialty procedure that should be done by a periodontist or a cosmetic dentist. At Waterloo West, we offer these cosmetic procedures in-house, for your convenience, by our own experienced cosmetic dentistry specialist.

The procedure for removing excess tissue involves a scalpel or soft tissue laser. The excess tissue is carefully removed, and the gumline is sculpted precisely, so that teeth show better. For those with uneven gum thickness, this procedure will even this out for a more consistent look. Sutures may be needed in some cases.

For receding gums, tissue will be added to your gum line. Usually the tissues are taken from another area of the mouth. The tissues are grafted on, to lengthen and reshape the gum line.

The time necessary for these procedures will depend on how complicated or dramatic the involved reshaping and contouring is. Usually, the procedure can be completed in under two hours. Although the procedure is painless, you may feel irritation afterwards. We will guide you on how to minimize this.

Complete Smile Makeover

Gum Contouring with Full Mouth Reconstruction

If a total smile makeover is what you’re after, gum reshaping and contouring can be combined with other treatments to achieve the perfect smile.

Perfecting Gum Ratio

Whether combined with porcelain veneers, dental implants, or alone, gum contouring perfects the ratio and even shape of your gums.

Teeth Whitening

A good gum ratio is even more attractive and aesthetic with beautifully whitened teeth. In rare cases, teeth whitening can cause gum recession, which can be corrected with gum tissue replacement.

Adding Gum Tissues Before Aligning

Adding gum tissue may be necessary before correcting misaligned teeth, for best results, especially if gum disease caused recession for you. It may also be necessary before installing dental implants.

Cosmetic Procedures to Complement

At Waterloo West Dentistry we offer a full range of cosmetic dental services and related procedures, all in-house, to allow you to achieve a full smile makeover in one place. We can monitor and protect your dental health throughout, and ensure all our dental services complement each other, for a unified approach to your complete smile transformation.

Our wide variety of cosmetic dentistry procedures includes some that work well with and complement a contouring procedure. We also offer dental veneers, including porcelain veneers, to correct chipped teeth or a range of minor imperfections. For some patients, it is a more effective alternative to teeth whitening, as it covers tooth discolourations. Contouring of gums can complement getting veneers for an even more beautiful result.

Contouring is also often used in conjunction with a dental implant to replace a missing tooth or with bridges that replace several missing teeth. With an implant, this procedure is also referred to as crown lengthening. Crown lengthening can be performed on one tooth or many.

Crown lengthening is often done if you are getting new crowns or another type of restoration since the edges of restorations are hidden below the gums. They are also often too close to the bone or below the bone. With crown lengthening, the edge of a restoration can be reached, for a better fit. This also adds a bit of strength to the tooth structure and helps prevent the crown, or dental implant, from becoming loose. This helps with the aesthetic appearance of the restoration, as well as making it easier to brush and care for it, for better dental health.
